Celebrity Bash
It was only luck that this meeting got run. After a 10-lap practice for the Celebrity Teams, a few spits turned into a 15 minute shower and the track was very wet right on start time. A little hope and some wheel packing combined and this meet was underway some 40 minutes later

The mood amongst the Celebrities seemed one of joyful anxiety. Both Tony Fabish and Mark Edwards were keen to ignite last year's rivalry whilst Silver Ferns Casey Williams, Joline Henry and Leana de Bruin looked keen to get it and give it a go. Their competition comprised of Joel and Gumbo from The Rock radio and Rob Hamill, the latter taking to Stockcar racing like a fish to water

Race one was an extension of the earlier practice and a bit of a non-event with most drivers enjoying a little more seat time. By the second race, most had settled their nerves. It showed in faster lap times and more action. With the third race, Hamill decided it was his mission to slow his team's biggest threat, Edwards. The two shared paintwork for most of the race and it entertained the crowd. At the end of three races, it was team Fabish that won overall reversing last year's results by defeating team Edwards and the Silver Ferns

The biggest hits belonged to Henry and Hamill when both, on separate occasions, clobbered the wall in a totally solo effort - a feat always reversed for first time Stockcar racers. On reflection, all first time drivers did very well

Solos
Kihikihi Speedway's Vikings solo bike team scored a stunning victory over a Best of the Rest last Saturday winning 31 to 18. On a rain softened track there were plenty of thrills and spills in the quick fire nine heats of racing

Top scorer for Kihikihi was undefeated 15 year old wonder Bradley Wilson-Dean in his first season on the full sized 500cc machines. Backing the youngster up was another 15 year old, Billy Graham, and veteran rider Barry Free who was riding a mid 60's 2 valve bike many think should be in a museum!

Originally scheduled for 12 heats the number of bike races had to be reduced due to cuts to the programme caused by weather conditions.

Support Classes
Also on the bill was the King Country Streetstock Champs. Only nine locals and one Auckland car contested this year's event with 21K Blair Castleton avoiding the carnage finishing 1st after two race wins and a second placing

The support classes too had many highlights. The Stockcars mixed things up. Out-of-towners took the spoils but not without a fight from the local lads. Race three and 7K Dave Moore managed to roll himself whist keeping the visitors honest

Midgets proved possibly the biggest highlight with nothing but super fast, super close racing. Race one had 9A Michael Brunt waltz away with the win while back in the pack, 73K Brian Edwards broke the Kihikihi lap record. Race two had 12K Leyton Kendall racing the high-line in pursuit of the race leader. His persistence paid off as he won a thrilling three way drag to the finish. And race three saw Edwards and Brunt battle hard for the chequered flag with Edwards doing enough to see Brunt home by 0.32 of a second

The commitment to this event from the Kihikihi Speedway Club, The Head Injury Society and the Rock unfortunately did not convert into a big crowd but then again, I believe the rain had a say in that
